Katie & Charles at Lake Bluff Inn: A Summer Lakeside Wedding in South Haven, Michigan

Katie and Charles got married on June 27, 2026 at Lake Bluff Inn in South Haven, and the whole thing was extravagant but also close to the heart. Not just a day, either, a weekend. By the time the ceremony came around, people had already been together long enough that nobody was standing on ceremony about anything, and that shows up in photographs more than couples expect it to. What I loved most was how sure the two of them were about who they are. That came through in every choice they made, and it came through in the room.
The weather did exactly what you hope for from a June weekend on Lake Michigan, which is never guaranteed and never something I'd promise anybody. It just showed up for them.
Getting Ready

The morning had no rush in it. That's partly a credit to planning, and partly just these two and the people they invited. Hair and makeup were in the hands of Krystle Waivio and Blushed Beauty, and the lake was right there the entire time, which meant the light in those rooms was doing half my work for me.
Katie wore a vintage dress she sourced in Chicago. I'm not going to describe it to you, it deserves to be seen rather than summarized, but I will say that when a bride turns up in something she went out and found herself, there's a different energy to the morning. It's hers in a way that a dress chosen off a rack sometimes isn't.

My second photographer was with Charles and the guys, so neither side of that morning went undocumented. We go through the timeline together the week of the wedding, line by line, which means by the time the day arrives nobody is looking for me to ask what happens next.

The Ceremony on the Bluff

They married outside, on the grass above the water, with Lake Michigan filling everything behind them. It's one of those settings where you don't have to add much, and the smart thing is not to try.
Sycamore Floral LLC built the ceremony florals low and loose at their feet, whites and soft greens with cool blue running through them, a little wild at the edges, the kind of thing that looks like it grew there on the bluff that morning. Against open water and a sky that bright, it read beautifully. There were sailboats out past them for part of it, which nobody planned and nobody could have.

The ceremony was one of my favorite parts of the entire weekend. Guests were close in on both sides, there was no sound of anything but wind and the two of them and it moved quickly because it was personal rather than performed.
Their Vows
Their vows are the part I keep thinking about. They were so personal, and hearing the story of how they met read like a romance novel. Genuinely, that is what it felt like standing there with a camera, trying to stay out of the way of it.
Katie has such a presence about her, and Charles is full of life and zest and laughter, and every time he looked at her during those vows, cliches aside, it was adoration. That is the thing I am actually there for. Everything else on a wedding day can be beautiful and still not matter nearly as much as four or five minutes of two people telling each other the truth in front of everyone they love.
The Design and the Flowers

The design came from All Buttoned Up, and it was impeccable. Lakeside without being themed about it: creamy yellows, greens, soft blues, striped linens, warm wood and light pouring in from every direction because the reception space looks straight out at the water.
The tent was clear-sided, so the lake stayed part of the room all evening instead of disappearing once people sat down. Greenery hung overhead between fringed pendant lamps in a yellow that I would not have believed worked until I saw it in person. Rentals and decor came together through Event Theory, BBJ La Tavola and Modernly Events, with stationery by Open Air, and the escort card display outside was one of those details guests actually stopped at and talked about instead of walking past.

This is what good design does for photographs, by the way. It gives me a set of colors and surfaces that agree with each other, so wherever the day goes, the pictures still belong together.
Dinner and Dancing Under the Tent
Food and beverage were handled by Whipped Catering, Clique Co, and Nantucket, with the bar run by Beverage Specialist. Funkle Jesse carried the music, and the dance floor filled early and stayed that way, which is the clearest sign in the world that the guest list and the couple were a match.

Ette: The Wedding Tailor looked after the bride and bridesmaids' fashion, and Olive and Ivory and SJK Productions were filming alongside me all weekend. A day like this one runs on that many hands, and it ran smoothly.
Sunset Over Lake Michigan
And then the sun went down over the water, the way it does in South Haven in late June, and dinner more or less paused. People drifted out to the fence line with their drinks and stood there. Nobody had to be asked.

Those are my favorite frames from the whole weekend, and not one of them was arranged. That is what a lakeside wedding gives you if the timeline leaves room for it: twenty minutes where the best thing happening is the sky, and everyone knows it.
If You're Planning a Lakeside Wedding in Michigan
The reason this weekend worked is that Katie and Charles decided who they were long before they decided what their wedding would look like, and then they let the thing happen. The vows, the sunset, the dance floor, the weather they got lucky with. None of it was staged for me, and all of it is in their pictures.
If you're looking for a Michigan wedding photographer who will be where she said she'd be, know your timeline by heart and then leave your day alone enough to actually photograph it, I'd love to hear about yours. Tell me about the two of you and what you want your weekend to feel like, and start a conversation with me at amycarroll.photography.
